History

Tenuta di Roscetti dates back to the 12th Century. It was originally built as a convent and was transformed into a fortified castle during medieval times when it was owned by a very important, aristocratic family called the Marsili-Libelli who were from Siena.

Around this time, the turrets were added to the high walls above the main gate.

Later, during the 18th century, a daughter from the Marsili-Libelli family married a son from the Vivarelli-Colonna family who owned much of the surrounding land. The young couple were gifted the house by the family. From that day on, the house has remained in the hands of the Vivarelli-Colonna family.

The Vivarelli-Colonna family were very important land-owners. They are known to have owned the Fattoria (Farm) di Roscetti since the 8th Century. This makes the Fattoria di Roscetti one of the oldest, existing working farms in the world. What’s even more astonishing is that the farm and much of the land has never left the family’s ownership since the 8th century!

During the 17th and 18th centuries, much work was done to the house, which included a large extension and the house became the home as we know it today.

During the Second World War, the house was occupied by Nazi Germany and was heavily bombed. Much of the house had to be re-built and in fact, the Grandparents and then the parents of the current owner, during the 1950 and 1960s made many important improvements, making this beautiful house as comfortable as it is today. All of this of course whilst still managing the families vast amount of land and the historic Fattoria di Roscetti. Please read more about the Fattoria, from its ancient beginnings to its 100% biological and self-sufficient production.

Today, the house is available for weekly rental but it’s of utmost importance to the owner that the ethos behind every aspect of his estate is that of respect to the environment, the animals that roam the estate and the lengths that he goes to to protect and preserve his heritage.
